Potter's Ground

Welcome Back to Potter's Ground

Last month's winner was **Cam** with 25 points.

She will recieve a prize when she sends me the address to send it to!

Ok, this week's game will be more of an introspective one.

Time to open up the thoughts, the heart and the keyboards. Watch this clip from "Almost famous" and tell me what it sparks in you. What you write can be anything as long as it is related to the song, "Tiny Dancer", the movie, bus traveling or anything really. Even the color of Kate Hudson's hair. But, the more germane it is to the song or movie the more points you will get.

I can say both the movie and the song mean a lot to me for many, many reasons. But, I'll save that for tomorrow as I have a bit of a fever (ok 101.1 with medication ON BOARD). I can say this song and this movie means healing and comfort.

Here is the original full length version from the man himself, Elton John.

Good luck!

oh boy. not fair. this is one of Earl's favorite movies.

For me, i tiny dancer is probably my 2nd favorite EJ song (behind someone saved my life tonight). Honestly, thats probably because its a song that i think i can sing the Hell out of :)

For me, the best part of that scene is when Kate Hudson says at the end, you ARE home.

I think the dawning realization that, where you are at any point in time, is where you are truly MEANT to be, that just strikes a chord with me.

It's funny. That IS one of my favorite films, but that scene is one of my least favorite of the film.

I'm a weird stickler for things and I know that film editors have to cut scenes down and all, but all I noticed the first time I saw it was that Crowe cut out a whole portion of the song. No need for that.

As for the scene itself, my favorite part of it is right after they get on the bus and the girl with the green shirt waves after the bus and blows a kiss. Makes me smile every time I watch it. It just seems so genuine.

I've watched this film so many times, I've actually come up with a bunch of those small moments that I love. Wanna hear something weird? I watched the DVD with the audio commentary on and Cameron Crowe pointed out just about every one of those instances as something he loved as well. Including this scene with the girl waving.

As for Elton John songs and this film, my favorite is "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters". Miller runs through NYC looking for Penny after her heart is broken by Russell.

"And now I know
Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say
I thought I knew
But now I know that rose trees never grow in New York City

Until youve seen this trash can dream come true
You stand at the edge while people run you through
And I thank the lord theres people out there like you
I thank the lord theres people out there like you!
"

Slyde: I changed the Potter's Ground day for you and other's that couldn't view the clips at work, I am glad you responded first.

And I must say, the whole concept of 'wherever you go, there you are' is really striking.

You get 10 points my tank topped friend!

Damn Earl. That is deep.

I guess the think is, the thing between Penny and Russell, is that it is a big fake, in the end it is just useless. He isn't man enough to make her dreams come true, to be the man she wants and needs.

But, I see Penny as a symbol for this whole make believe world that Miller falls into. She is a portal for him. But, it is make believe. The magic is fake, all trash can underneath. And trash cans can't be the basis of real dreams.

Either way, way to step up there Earl. I can't believe this, but you were so deep up there, you get 15 points.

A Potter's Ground first!

I actually believe that Russell truly loved Penny. She was his muse as an artist and the love of his life. But he was weak, as most men are, when it comes time to choose.

You are right about Penny. She is the symbol of the magical world of rock and roll. Everything that is good and (believe it or not) pure. Her heart is broken, William grows up and Russell moves on. Rock is dead. As Philip Seymour Hoffman (as Lester Bangs) says "It's just a shame you missed out on rock and roll. It's over. You got here just in time for the death rattle. Last gasp. Last grope."

William's time with Stillwater and Penny was that last grope.

I don't know Earl, about Russell. There's love, then there is like love. I believe, in the hotel room, away from the real world, Russell did love Penny. But it wasn't really love, just like love.

If he trully loved her he would have choosen her above all else.

But, maybe this is ex-artist/musician baggage talking.

Either way, I agree with Mr. Bangs, that this was the last grope. It's very much different now.

There is no possible way that I can top what Earl had to say. He's obviously put a lot of thought in to this.

I will say that I ADORE this movie. I graduated from high school in '74, so the look of the movie...the sets, etc, the music, the hair, the wardrobe.....it all took me back to high school and that time period in my life.

I remember when Elton John was first played on the radio back then.... "FM" stations only, of course. ;-) "Your Song" was my and my brother's favorite Elton John song. We'd cruise the streets of downtown San Antonio in my brother's old Chevy Impala....just ridin' around (which you could do back then when you could also pull up to a full service gas station and ask the attendant for "a dollar's worth of gas")....listening to Elton John, Steely Dan, Santana, Chicago.... Good times...

Ok.

I'll stop now! ;-)
